Capuchino High School Music Teacher Johnathan Hsu was selected as the November Certificated Golden Apple recipient. Johnathan was nominated by his colleagues, please read excerpts from those nominations below:

Laura Chalkley: What a pleasure it is to know and get to work with the tremendously talented Johnathan Hsu. Year by year he discovers and develops the rich and varied talents of his students whose music fills my heart with pure joy! When the request came for a marching band at the promotion ceremony of a local Colonel to the rank of General in the US Army Corps of Engineers, Johnathan was on it representing Capuchino making both his school and our District proud! Johnathan’s musicians have won numerous awards, but the true value of his work is being a supportive teacher who makes school worthwhile and engaging for his students. The world is a more beautiful place because Johnathan is in it, developing the talent of his students.

Michelle Lemire: I would like to recognize my colleague, Johnathan, for his exceptional dedication as Capuchino’s Director of Music. His passion for music is matched only by the genuine care he shows for his students. Johnathan consistently goes above and beyond, patiently guiding students through challenging material, and creating a classroom environment where every learner feels valued and inspired. His enthusiasm is contagious, and it elevates not only his own program, but the energy and morale of our entire performing arts community. Johnathan is a collaborator in the truest sense, always ready to lend his expertise, offer encouragement, and celebrate others’ successes. Our school is better because of his presence, and our students are fortunate to learn from someone so committed to their growth, both musically and personally. Personally, I am grateful to work alongside such a thoughtful, talented, and dedicated educator.

Demian Martens: Johnathan Hsu has been an incredible force for developing young talent. Students are not only learning to develop their musical skills, they are also learning all the skills that will make them better learners, better listeners, better partners and better professionals. Mr. Hsu sets high standards of conduct, practice and performance that have earned the performing bands many, many awards and credits that have brought students much pride and increased motivation to be a part of this incredibly demanding program. He is a model of a “warm demander” always keeping good humor forefront, and quiet expectation of the best in his students always. I am incredibly impressed at the camaraderie, enthusiasm and dedication to do something exceptionally difficult he has been able to elicit from the students under his guidance. While Johnathan is a humble man he deserves to take a moment to be proud of what he has accomplished, and take a bow. I expect he will then provide an even more impressive encore performance for many years to come.

Jose Gomez: Johnathan Hsu is a tremendous music educator and a fierce advocate for his program. He has devoted countless hours to building a robust, high-quality music offering at CHS. Under his leadership, our ensembles have earned numerous first-place finishes and individual honors accomplishments that highlight not only the talent of our students, but the depth of Johnathan’s investment in cultivating a strong, dynamic program with high expectations for all. Johnathan’s work extends beyond our campus. He and his team actively collaborate with our middle school partners to support and strengthen their music programs, helping to create a strong pipeline of engaged, prepared young musicians who are excited to continue in music once they arrive at CHS. Since my tenure as Principal of CHS, Johnathan has rebuilt and revitalized a music program that has a rich legacy and has long been one of the pillars of our school’s 75-year history. His leadership, vision, and relentless commitment to students have restored that tradition of excellence and moved it forward. Johnathan is highly deserving of this award. His efforts are evident not only in the trophies and accolades our students bring home, but in the pride, discipline, and sense of belonging he inspires in them every day.

Zan Levine: Mr. Johnathan Hsu is an outstanding music educator whose impact at Capuchino High School cannot be overstated. His exceptional leadership and mentorship have not only inspired countless students but also strengthened ties with our local San Bruno community. Through his dedication, students have consistently excelled in music competitions, showcasing their talents and hard work. Beyond his achievements with students, Mr. Hsu is a joy to work with. He is not just a great teacher but also an amazing team member. His friendly demeanor and collaborative spirit make him an excellent colleague. As a smart professional, he approaches challenges with creativity and insight, contributing significantly to our art department’s success. Mr. Hsu's enthusiasm and passion for music education light up our school, and his contributions make a real difference every day.
