Spanish Language Courses
SPANISH I
GRADE: 9-12 CREDITS: 10 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? Yes
PREREQUISITES: None
Spanish I is a course for true beginners. We will start off with basic greetings and survival vocabulary. Students will be able to ask for and give directions, have a phone conversation, talk about likes and dislikes, and will explore the many varieties of foods in the Spanish speaking world. Grammar is kept basic, focusing mostly on present tense, commands and a little past tense. Students will also complete projects such as designing books in Spanish, making maps of cities, filming skits and conversations to enhance their use of the target language.
SPANISH II
GRADE: 9-12 CREDITS: 10 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? Yes
PREREQUISITES: Completion of Spanish I with a C or better, or 2 years of Spanish in 7th 8th grades with a C or better or instructor approval.
Second year Spanish is a course for students who have had first year Spanish or who may hear some Spanish at home or with relatives and are ready to build upon their native skills. Students will master the past tense, the commands in more depth and many irregular verbs. There will be more involved vocabulary and students will master expressions needed for traveling in Spanish speaking countries. There will be singing and skits as students actively participate in their language acquisition. This course highlights the customs and geography of Spanish speaking countries, and students will do projects further exploring this knowledge.
SPANISH III
GRADE: 10-12 CREDITS: 10 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? Yes
PREREQUISITES: Completion of Spanish II with a C or better or consent of the instructor
Spanish III focuses on more advanced grammatical structures such as the future, subjunctive, conditional and imperfect tenses. Students will be expected to speak in Spanish as much as possible, while having short conversations with partners and presenting additional information on culture. This class explores culture in more detail, with units focusing on clothing, food , travel, art, music and literature of the Spanish speaking world.
IB SPANISH
GRADE: 11-12 CREDITS: 20 (2years) COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? Yes
PREREQUISITES: Completion of two years of high school Spanish or recommendation of the teacher
The main focus of these courses is language acquisition and the development of the four skills: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Students are given the opportunity of developing a high degree of competence in the target language and of exploring the culture using the language. Students learn to express themselves in a wide range of purposes and situations, such as the domain of work, social relationships, and the discussion of abstract ideas. Students will be competent in three interrelated areas: language (grammar, vocabulary, etc.); cultural interaction; and message (understanding ideas and how to communicate them appropriately).
Spanish for Native Speakers II
Grade: 9-12
Duration/Credits Year/10 Credits
UC/CSU: Yes; “e” - World Languages. Note: passing the course with a C- or higher fulfills the two-year UC/CSU requirement.
Prerequisite: Students have conversational Spanish from an early age, from a Spanish-speaking home or by attending a Spanish-immersion program. Students need a teacher recommendation and writing sample.
In the course we will focus on the four modes of communication: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish (students and teacher). With respect to language, we will also increase our vocabularies, work on our grammar and spelling (including written accents), and we’ll focus on the difference between formal and informal language. We will also explore other personal and cultural topics such as Hispanic/Latino identity and bilingualism, the community, culture, the news, influential Latinos, literature, art, and more.
En el curso, vamos a mejorar los cuatro modos de la comunicación: escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir. En esta clase solo hablamos en español. Ampliaremos el vocabulario, perfeccionaremos la gramática y la ortografía (el alfabeto y los acentos/tildes) y nos centraremos en la diferencia entre el habla “formal” e “informal.” También vamos a tratar los temas de la identidad hispana/latina y el bilingüismo, la comunidad, noticias, la cultura, latinos de gran influencia, la literatura, el arte y más.
Spanish for Native Speakers III

Prerequisite: C- or higher in Spanish for Native Speakers II.
In the course we will continue our focus on the four modes of communication: listening, reading, writing and speaking and prepare for our transition to IB Spanish HL 1 the following year. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish (students and teacher). With respect to language, we will also increase our vocabularies, work on our grammar and spelling (including written accents), and we’ll focus on the difference between formal and informal language. We will also explore other personal and cultural topics such as Hispanic/Latino identity and bilingualism, the community, culture, the news, influential Latinos, literature, art, and more.
En el curso, vamos a continuar a mejorar los cuatro modos de la comunicación: escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir y prepararnos para el tomar el curso de Español BI HL (avanzado) el siguiente año. En esta clase solo hablamos en español. Ampliaremos el vocabulario, perfeccionaremos la gramática y la ortografía (el alfabeto y los acentos/tildes) y nos centraremos en la diferencia entre el habla “formal” e “informal.” También vamos a tratar los temas de la identidad hispana/latina y el bilingüismo, la comunidad, noticias, la cultura, latinos de gran influencia, la literatura, el arte y más.
