Digital Photography is a one-year course for students interested in the evolving field of Digital Photography. They will learn to capture digital images as well as how to do post-capture editing and sharing. Students will learn and apply elements of art and principles of design. They will use digital photographic equipment, materials, and methods, applying theory with hands-on practice. Students will learn the history of photography, studying and emulating a variety of photographic styles. They will create online portfolios of original compositions. Students will learn to critique others’ work, and to learn from critiques of their own.
Students will complete projects that require meeting deadlines, doing iterations of their project as they learn from critiques. They will learn how to organize and edit their projects using industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite. They will manage their workflow, learning how to store images without loss of quality. They will fine-tune their submissions to fit the proper media, sizing for screen or print results. They will work in teams as well as solo. Service projects and contests will create real-world opportunities to enhance their portfolios.
Pathway: As part of a pathway, this course is a prerequisite for Advanced Digital Photography. With instructor portfolio review, it can be a gateway to Advanced Art, Advanced Multimedia, and Advanced Art of Video.

Prerequisites: Digital Photography or Art and Multimedia
Advanced Digital Photography is a one-year course for students interested in continuing their education in the evolving field of Digital Photography. Having taken the foundation coursework in Digital Photography, students will now continue their mastery with the overall objective of the course to building a portfolio of work, more deeply understanding post-processing, becoming more comfortable with their SLR cameras, and how to critique their own work and the work of their fellow students. This course is intended to offer multiple opportunities for students to develop a Concentration or Theme of images in addition to showing a variety of techniques.
Students will continue to learn and apply elements of art, principles of design, a variety of compositional techniques, develop a thematic series of photographs, as well as re-apply the skills they have learned in Digital Photography in a more independent and professional way in an effort to find their own style. Students will continue to use digital photographic equipment, materials, and methods, applying theory with hands-on practice. Students will learn about contemporary photographers, careers in photography, and how the application of photographic techniques is a life-long practice that is only mastered with practice and repetition. Students will learn to critique others’ work, and to learn from critiques of their own.
Students will continue to complete projects that require them to show leadership by scheduling models and studio time planning lighting set-ups and directing assistants and models in this shoot while meeting deadlines and reflecting on their work relative to the technical requirements for each project. Students will continue best practices in the organization and editing of their projects using industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite. Similar to working professionals in the field, students will develop their own websites. Students will Students will provide leadership in the planning and execution of a photography show open to the community. They will also research a career in photography and begin an understanding of the numerous opportunities available with the skills they have attained.
