This one-year concentrator course explores the artistic impact of video communication and its application to the present culture as well as allowing students to develop technical proficiency and leadership skills through a project based curriculum. Through readings, demonstrations, critiques, lectures, and assignments students will gain a fundamental knowledge of the processes and strategies used in creating video content. Student's imaginations and creative abilities will be challenged through hands-on projects utilizing their understanding of and experience with designing stories, writing scripts, directing, acting, frame composition, camera angles and movement, audio, lighting, and editing. Topics will include an introduction to the history of film and video communication, the fundamentals of composition and movement, the aesthetic use of light, color, and sound and the art of storytelling, production design and directing. The topics will also include the digital artistry in editing and graphics, creative design in commercial and broadcast productions, career explorations, and portfolio development.

Students will complete projects that require meeting deadlines, doing iterations of their project as they learn from critiques. They will learn how to organize and edit their projects using industry-standard software such as Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop and Audition. They will manage their workflow, learning how to manage video, sound and special effects. They will work on teams as well as solo. Service projects and contests will create real-world opportunities to enhance their portfolios.

 

ADVANCED ART OF VIDEO

Prerequisites: Art of Video or Digital Photography  or Art & Multimedia

This one-year advanced course provides an opportunity for students to further develop the foundation of film theory, history, textual analysis and production skills established in the first year of the course. Through readings, demonstrations, critiques, lectures, and production assignments, students will build upon their prior knowledge of the processes and strategies used in creating video/film content. Students will be challenged through hands-on projects utilizing their understanding of the history of film and video communication, composition and movement, the aesthetic use of light, color, and sound, narrative design and storytelling, production design and directing, as well as the technical skills of editing, graphics design and distribution. Students will develop their abilities as independent producers working on their own production portfolios as well as projects for our community.

As a CTE class, students will develop leadership by taking charge of teams of their peers in production companies, broadcast teams, and an annual Film Festival or other school-wide event. In production companies they will facilitate planning, assign roles, execute that plan, and lead their team in reflecting on their learning. As part of a broadcast team they will provide leadership in the development of scripts, live direction, post production, and reflection. For the annual Film Festival Art of Video Advanced Students will chair committees of their peers and other Pathway students in areas such as fundraising, design, promotion, technical aspects, and organization to ensure a successful outcome.
