William Vanderlugt breaks a 40 year old record at Capuchino High School

On March 25, 2026, William Vanderlugt, captain of Capuchino High School's track and field team, shattered a four-decade-old school record in the 1600-meter race. Competing at the Dublin Distance Fiesta—one of the largest track meets in the nation, drawing over 240 schools and 4,000 athletes from California and Nevada—William clocked in at 4:28, besting the previous record of 4:29 set in 1976.

The 1600m demands more than speed; it requires endurance and mental fortitude. For a runner at this caliber, even a one-second improvement represents months of dedicated training. William's achievement is particularly impressive considering this is only his second year competing in track, though he brings four years of cross country experience to the sport.

Since joining the track program, William has made remarkable strides in his running career. He plans to continue competing at the collegiate level after graduation this year. Breaking a long-standing record that countless athletes have attempted—and failed—to surpass is a significant milestone.

Congratulations, Will!
