Sound Manipulation

  • Editing or mixing audio involves:
    • cleaning up production sound to filter unwanted noise
    • splitting spoken lines onto separate tracks; in multilayered dialogue, an editor may place separate speakers on separate tracks.
    • adjusting volume, tonal qualities
    • sweetening- refers to selecting part(s) of the frequency spectrum
    • adjusting formats, or frequency bands, and acoustics of voice - sharp, flat, hollow, robust.
    • mixing/matching voice with other frequencies
    • digitally mixing computer sample sounds
    • mixing or stacking disparate sounds together
    • equalizing, blending, and balancing tracks
  • Distortion - in recording or rerecording
  • Delivery of sound - through multiple or single speakers, Dolby or THX
