Short Film Critique
The Day in a Life project asks you to bring an object to life. Use the following Rubric to assess your project. You will be writing a 5 paragraph critique that evaluates how well you met the following criteria, so please consider each point carefully and give examples from your work that support your evaluation. Write a paragraph on each area of focus on the critique.
1st- Preproduction-
- Describe the planning that went into creating this piece.
- What challenges did you have with your script?
- Was your script easy to visualize?
- How well did your project match your detailed shotlist?
2nd- Narration, Text Overlays and Audio
- How well did your story develop into the 3 Act Structure of Setup, Maze and Resolution?
- What were some of the challenges you had with your story?
- Did you use a voice over with your project? Why or why not? How did it turn out?
- How does your music interact with your narration?
- Did you use an instrumental track?
- What moods does your instrumental track create through out the film?
3rd Camera work
- How was the framing and composition of your video work?
- What was your favorite video footage or shot?
- Were your shots properly lit?
- Did you use a tripod on your shots?
- Were your camera movements smooth and steady?
- How did you incorporate different motion, index, or graphic vectors into your shots?
- How well did you work with your actors in production?
- What locations did your choose to shoot in?
4th Edit-
- How well were you able to create an interesting introduction to your piece?
- Did you include titles in your introduction?
- How was the pacing/timing of your images and titles?
- Does the story clearly flow from a beginning, middle and end?
- Does your video footage clearly relate to the content of your audio?
- Did you use match action cuts? Where?
- How did you use screen direction and eyeline match?
- Did you include closing credits?
- What were you biggest challenges in the editing of your project?
5th Overall-
Reflect back on the entire project and consider how well you did overall?
- What are your favorite parts?
- What would you do differently if you had more time?
- What advice would you give someone about to start the same project?
