Media Literacy
Students will explore how the media influences and reflects cultural norms. Students will investigate universal themes, techniques and concepts used in contemporary media to influence our values, politics, and buying habits. Television, Film and AdvertisingTotal Hours: 7 hours

View and discuss “In the Mix” and complete discussion questions and 2 page written response.
View and discuss the frontline documentary the “Merchants of Cool”
Use PBS website to and write 2 page response.
Review and Discuss Propaganda techniques and analyze super bowl commercials.
Design and storyboard a “Counter Ad”

Film History
Students will explore the role of film in history and culture. They will investigate the early developments and pioneers of the art. Students will also explore some of the universal themes and concepts explored in film. Total Hours: 5 hours

Read and Take notes on Mass Media Cybertext Modules 1-5.
View and Critique sample films from a variety of time periods, genres and directors.

Camera Unit
Students will learn to identify and manipulate the technical elements involved in using a camera. Students will learn how visual elements and principle of design apply to the video medium. Total Hours: 15 hours

View lectures and take notes on Zettl’s cd-rom Camera unit.
Complete a composition storyboard.
Complete a review power-point on assigned sections and present.
Complete a Camera Exam
Complete a hands-on Camera and Tripod Demonstration
Complete the Shot List Scavenger Hunt Project and 10 Shot Scene
Critique shot list projects in a 500 word review on the project.


Editing Unit
Students will identify and manipulate the technical elements involved in editing. They will also demonstrate their ability to use a non-linear editing system called Imovie and edit images using Photoshop. Total Hours: 15 hours

View lectures and take notes on Zettl’s cd-rom Editing unit.
Diagram an A/B roll editing system.
Complete a review power-point on assigned sections and present.
Complete an Editing Exam
Learn the basics of system operation and file management on a Macintosh computer.
Complete the Imovie tutorial that teaches students use video, titles, transitions, effects and still images in the completion of a project.
Use Photoshop to resize and apply filters to images.


The Life Story Project
Students will design their own projects that incorporate all elements of productions. Content of piece will focus on documentary style personal autobiographies. Total Hours: 15 Hours

Brainstorm and create a script.
Create a storyboard of their script that outlines shots, shot descriptions and narration
Create a recording of their narration that is to be used in the project.
Collect and digitize photos and home video footage to be used in projects
Shoot video footage and complete final edit in Imovie that includes titles, narration, still photos, video footage, background audio and transitions.
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement.


Lighting Unit
Students will learn about the importance of lighting in relation to the video medium. Students will learn vocabulary used to describe the aesthetics of lighting. Students will demonstrate their knowledge by recreating common lighting designs and using lighting equipment. Total Hours: 10 hours

Complete a lighting design for a mock interview
Complete review powerpoints on assigned sections and present.
Complete a Lighting Exam
Complete a lighting demo that demonstrates how to properly handle and setup a lighting kit for a shoot.

Video Poem Project
Students will be asked to create an artistic video piece that explores an issue, interest, or idea that they find meaningful to them. Students will be asked to direct actors’ performances for the completion of their project and creatively use the camera to convey emotions. Total Hours: 15 hours

Discuss and practice acting and directing exercises in class.
Create a shot list for their poem.
Create a 3 column storyboard that includes sketches of shots, shot descriptions and poetry.
Direct and shoot all original footage for the project.
Complete final edit using Imovie
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement


Editing in Final Cut Pro
Students will learn the more advanced editing techniques in FCP such as multi track audio and video editing, title generation and animation, applying and animating filters and transitions, three-point edits. Total Hours: 10 hours

Complete the tutorial for FCP with the class.
Learn to Log and Capture 5 jump cuts into FCP
Learn to Export footage from FCP to a master tape.

Public Service Announcement
Students will produce, direct, shoot, and edit their own PSA’s that focus on teen issues on campus. Total Hours: 15 hours

View and critique contemporary PSA’s.
Identify key features and techniques used in this genre of production.
Research statistics on selected topic and write a treatment and script for their production.
Direct and shoot projects.
Edit PSA’s using FCP.
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement


Compositing and Motion Graphic Unit
Students will learn advanced editing techniques that involve layering of video elements within a sequence and applying keying effects. Students will also use advanced key-framing of text and graphics in their projects. Total Hours: 5 hours

Complete the advanced compositing tutorial provided by the instructor.
Learn the basics involved in animating key frames.
Learn the basics of incorporating a green screen into a production.

Production Logo Animation
Students will design their own production logo and incorporate motion graphics and green screen into their design. Total Hours: 5-10 hours

Evaluate and critique key elements of production logo animation.
Create a treatment/proposal
Storyboard the animation.
Design and create Layers in Photoshop to be animated in FCP.
Shoot and edit footage in FCP.
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement

Project: Broadcast Segment
Students will learn the process used in producing a piece of broadcast journalism and create their own news stories on topics of their choosing. Total Hours: 20 hours

Evaluate and critique key elements of broadcast news journalism.
Identify b-roll, interviews, voice-overs, and sound bytes
Practice script writing format for broadcast.
Practice interviewing techniques, shot composition and microphone use.
Choose a topic and create a pre production sheet.
Conduct interviews, and gather b-roll footage.
Complete a rough cut of interviews and create script.
Complete voice-overs and final edit.
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement


Music Video
Students will direct, shoot and edit a music video that incorporates contemporary editing styles and content. Total Hours: 15 hours

Evaluate and critique key elements of music videos.
Identify styles and trends in a variety of productions.
Select an appropriate song and write a treatment/proposal
Storyboard the project
Create titles and graphics
Direct and shoot project
Edit final version in FCP
Critique projects as a group and write an individual 500 word critique discussing their production’s strengths and areas for improvement|


Short Film or Documentary
Students will write and produce their own short films or documentaries. Total Hours: 15 hours

Evaluate and critique key elements of films such as plot structure, character development, shooting techniques etc.
Learn screen writing conventions and format.
Write a five page screen play using the standard conventions
Storyboard selected screenplays
Direct and shoot scenes in small groups.
Edit final version in FCP
Score film using FCP audio production software.
