Broadcast Roles and
Responsibilites
IN THE CONTROL ROOM
Producer/Director:
Keeps an eye on the big picture
Makes all major decisions and has absolute control of crew
Creates and Marks up the script with commands, and switching of cameras.
Check with crew in the control room such as CG, Switcher, etc… to
make sure they had all they need and are doing their jobs.
Check that the cameras are placed on the talent in the proper way (good
head room, CU, 2 shot, etc…)
During production, makes all calls on the set and runs the show
Audio Tech:
Makes sure Talent A and B have correct mics and match the feeds on the
audio mixer
To make sure the audio levels are in the green for all audio sources
Choose music for opening and closing and any other place where music is
necessary.
Does a Mic check on the talent.
During production, controls all audio levels for entire production
Video Operator:
Find out how many b-roll segments will be used in the broadcast
Make sure all tapes are cued up so they start right at the beginning of
the piece.
If required, make sure all necessary Chroma Key footage is ready to go.
Have the "master" ready to record the broadcast.
During production, listen to producer and roll tapes as needed.
Video Switcher
Checks all camera feeds for white balance, focus, composition and head-room.
Helps video operator cue b-roll and chroma key footage.
Makes sure graphics are seen in the switcher and ready for production
Sets up chroma key with graphics and checks quality of key for both Cam
A and B.
Controls effects, PIP’s and transitions between shots.
During broadcast will switch between camera and vcr feeds
Character Generator:
Gathers all title information for production: names, segments, credits,
etc.
Have all the necessary titles for the show.
Make sure all titles are separated by different pages.
Make sure titles are legible and colors don’t blend into each other
In production, rolls credits and titles on director’s cue.Graphics
Operator
Design graphics (PIP’s) for script
Run through script and make sure graphics match the script and are appropriate
Check size and placement of graphic ( should be set to right side of screen)
During production, advance slides as the switcher cuts to talent
Tele-prompter
Runs through script on a power point slide show for the talent to read.
Double check that written script matches slides in power point.
Make sure that all text is as large as you can make it on each slide.
40 point font is good
Keep b-roll intros and closings on the same slide
During production, moves slides once the talent has read their lines.
ON THE SET
Floor Director:
Makes sure all equipment in studio is on and properly functioning such
as lights, cameras, mics, and teleprompter.
Gets all people on the set to their positions and hands-out scripts.
Controls volume and all people on the set
Talks to Camera Operators about what camera shots they need to be prepared
for and double checks for manuel focus and exposure.
Talks to talent about the script, cues, lines and cameras
Communicates all commands from director to crew on set.
During broadcast, listens to director and cues talent with hand signals
and reminds camera operators about shots.
Camera Operator:
Have their camera white balanced, exposure adjusted and set to manual
focus.
Set up and rehearsed shots.
Have the shot approved by the video switcher.
Be prepared for shot changes later on in the show.
During production, listen and executing all calls from director.
Talent:
Notice whether you are Talent A or B and clip on assigned mics
Look over the script and practice text, names, etc…
Know which camera to look at.
Rehearse cues with floor director
Write any ad-lib parts they need to perform such as greetings and good-byes.
Be aware of camera changes from 2 shots to close-ups.
LOOK HAPPY
During broadcast, wait for floor director’s cues and read teleprompter
slowly and clearly, looking at the lens as much as possible.
