Link Crew 2008 by Carmen C.
This year’s Freshmen Orientation was much different from the previous years. Thanks to Ms. Knott and Ms. Cerra freshmen were greeted at orientation this year by Juniors and Seniors in purple shirts known as Link Leaders. Link Crew as it’s called consists only of Juniors and Seniors that had been nominated by
their teachers for skills as a leader and role models for the school. On freshmen orientation day, they would each be responsible for a group of ten freshmen who they would lead in activities that would show the fun and the challenge that high school presents . The students filled out an application and were chosen by Ms. Knott and Ms. Cerra to become a part of the Link Crew. Last May, these Juniors and Seniors attended a May Play Day in which they learned all the fun activities that they would have to teach their group of freshmen. The next time these students would meet would be August 11 and 12. These two days were packed with training where the students learned how to lead the activities and provide support for their freshmen.
The big day was August 14. Link Leaders arrived at Cap at 7am to turn the gym into a freshmen wonderland. As the freshmen walked into the gym, there was a large group of Link Leaders to give them a big cheer and round of applause. After playing several fun, get to know ya games, the freshmen were split off into their groups with their Link Crew. For about an hour, their Link Leader(s) taught them how to deal with the problems they would face in high school by doing fun, learning activities. Then, in wacky costumes or with crazy props, the freshmen received a tour of the school via their Link Leaders. Afterwards, a complimentary BBQ was provided by the wonderful PTO.
The overall event was a success with 234 freshmen in attendance! The leaders thought the event was a success and enjoyed being in a leadership role. Several activities are already being planned for this year so be on the look out for those purple shirts. |
